WHAT SEED TYPES SHOULD YOU STORE?

Home gardeners usually have two types of seeds to choose from: hybrid and heirloom. Hybrid seeds are seeds that were artificially pollinated in order to produce certain characteristics i.e. greater yield, bigger fruits, faster growth, etc. Heirloom seeds on the other hand are seeds that were saved and passed down from one generation to another. These were stored because they have characteristics of high value such as the yield’s flavor, adaptability, hardiness or productivity.

The best type of seed to store is the heirloom seed because this type of seed is generally known to be true to its parent plant. Since heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, this means you can store your seed and replant them year after year. Also, unlike hybrid seeds, heirloom vegetables or crops don’t ripen all at the same time, which ensures a gradual supply of fresh produce. The yields of heirloom seeds are also higher in nutritional value and when bought from seed racks and catalogs, they are less expensive than hybrid seeds.

Experienced home gardeners who have also saved their seeds find that hybrid seeds don’t yield the same amount of produce in the second or third generation. They are basically sterile and don’t store well. Because of this, you need to buy them every year from stores and wouldn’t be possible once crisis strike.
